Space City Con 2013 Doctors and Droids and Demigods Oh My

Just returned home from this years Space City Con. It was, well crowded, if I had to chose just one word. I dont think the planners were expecting such a large turn out. The space was far to small but very fun at the same time, with everything packed into one hotel.

We got to test run the new closures on Loki’s costume, and decided they dont really work for the back closure we need. But we talked to some people who make and sell chain mail and leaf mail sowe have ideas for moving forward.  I got to talk with two make up artists who were very kind to answer all of my questions on mold making and airbrush make up.   I feel a whole lot better about the outcome of our next set of costumes. Fiberglass molding here I come. Look out!

We got to hear Sylvester McCoy and Robert Picardo, and several others and it was brilliant. We met so awesome cos players and hope meet up with them at the next con.

And finally found the best emapanads in Houston.

Over all a great weekend..

Bad in Black

I learned something about myself this weekend. Something I maybe knew before but had really brought home.

I make a really bad goth. Now, to anyone who stumbles upon this blog you may wonder why I am posting this. How exactly did I come to this revelations. Well the long of it… the long of it is quite long and involves rehashing my school days and the fact that I was saved from public school and a world where I would probably have ended up quite goth in everything but the black hair, and thrust into private school and uniforms and found a lot of more redeeming things to do with my time.

Oddly enough its some of the same things I can see myself having done in public school, but the people there were better influences. While public school theater could have been a gateway drug to, well, gateway drugs, in private school it lead to the best Mentor I have ever had.

But, this weekends revelation, it came in the form of a wig. My sister and I are working on convention costumes. reworking some we have that like and just need some tweaking ( pics to come). Our wigs came in this weekend. And i tried on the loki/elphaba black wig. I looked horrible. darker, not my color.

While this does not quite discount me from being a goth, i know, but it makes a good case against my choosing that. and just reminded me of all the things in life that shapped me to this point and this wig..

I look much better as Glinda anyways. blonds have more fun. 🙂

Day One

I turned 30 this year.  Some of my girlfriends and I started a 30 for 30 life event with lists of things to accomplish this year. One of the items brought up was start a blog. And I thought, yeah, that I can do. Between trips across the state and country, art classes or food tastings I thought I could chronicle this trip but also take after some of my favorite bloggers and try my hand at writing a bit about my passions for sci fi, costuming and crafts.

and so Crafting Charachters is born.  A place I can chronicle this year in crafts, characters, costumes and myself.  Here is to 30 years.
